Solar panels can be fitted onto an existing roof, either pitched or flat, or built into the roof structure during a roof refit or new build.
The use of solar thermal technologies is the most popular and well established of the renewable technologies. Solar thermal is used mainly for heating domestic hot water and works most effectively in the summer. In a lot of cases the primary heat source for hot water can be switched off during the summer months. Overall the system should provide around 50-70% of the domestic hot water requirements of the home. There are two type of solar collector available:
a.) Evacuated Tubes (evacuated tubes are more efficient of the two types).
b.) Flat plate collectors (flat plate collectors are the most common type of collector and are better suited to building into a roof.)
When looking at installing solar panels a number of things need to be considered.
1. Angle of the panels and / or the roof.
2. The orientation of the roof to the sun.
3. Any over hanging structures trees etc.
4.Estimated length of day light hours.
